MY ROLE : DESIGN RESEARCHER

DESIGN RESEARCH FOR INTERNAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGY

How might we design an inclusive internal communication strategy for AMDOCS

White Board consulting is the design firm that signed up for working on designing internal communication strategy for Amdocs, a telecommunication giant. For their Indian leg of design research, we joined them for doing research in Pune, India. To get a closer look at the scenarios in India, the plan was to interact with the employees and understand what they feel about internal communication. After all internal communication was about them.

To achieve this goal, we used following tools :

  • In person Interviews

  • Shadowing

  • Cultural Probes

  • Design Workshop

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH FOR INTERNAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGY

These findings were bucketed into various groups and actionable insights were derived from them laid the foundation for more employee centric strategy for internal communication.

FINDINGS GROUP  - 1

Learning activity - one checks because of mandatory training. It barely has any effect on an employee's career

Yammer, even though recommended by human resources is barely used.  FB, Lync and WA are used owing to quick response

FINDINGS GROUP 2

Most people attend workshops as they are recommended by their managers or superiors, not knowing why it’s relevant to them.

10%-15% of mails of internal communication mails are irrelevant.

Senior management emails are often ignored as they are - too heavy, need time and complex.

FINDINGS GROUP 3

Town Halls and Forums need to be inspiring and meaningful.

Volume of communication too high! Resources are too less feels the team working for internal communication

One stop solution for all portals doesn’t exist. One needs to search and look for things relevant to them due to bulk of things posted as internal communication.
